Manage Your Personal BrandWeve seen Don Draper successfully launch lots of ad campaigns, leveraging creative approaches and somewhat unorthodox ideas. But his success isnt solely a factor of his teams brilliant marketing techniques, its also the result of his undeniable charisma. When Don walks into a room, you know he means business- he dresses the part, arrives prepared, and is perfectly poised in his delivery.Confidence, sincerity, and having a presence go a long way in business, and as Don shows us, theres a lot to be gained from both talking the talk and walking the walk.2. Work Hard, Get NoticedEveryone scoffed when Peggy tried to break into the boys club at the agency, but it didnt take long for her hard work and perseverance to pay off. She had to endure a fair amount of grief, but eventually she surpassed many of her naysayers and landed a role she loved.There are lots of good lessons here Working hard for what you want, never taking no for an answer, and sometimes being willing to pay your dues and take an entry-level position to navigate to a better opportunity. While its not completely taboo to date a co-worker- lots of people do it- its best to keep it under wraps from 8 to 5 to avoid jeopardizing your credibility and professionalis m.5. A Womans Place is in the BoardroomI consider myself lucky that when I entered the workforce, women could pursue any path they chose. Gender was far less of a barrier than in the days of Mad Men, and its pretty hard to imagine a time when my participation in the labor force would have been stunted by cultural, educational, and legal practices. I have a true appreciation for women like Peggy and Joan (er, their real-life counterparts) who helped pave the way for my generation to kick butt and take names in the workplace. There may still be a glass ceiling, but its nothing compared to what women had to deal with in decades past.Times sure change, but the fundamentals of business success dont waver too much. So if you watch closely, theres a lot to be learned from Mad Men. For example, Wow, that has to be tough for you. How will you handle that?Complicators appear as critics, nitpickers, know-it-alls, and micromanagers. They want to block change. Masters of minutiae, they complain by finding flaws and in pointing out others incompetence.Negotiate with Complicators by respecting the intellect of their systems, thought processes, or designs. Present change as a logical addition and ask them to contribute. Can you give input on this next upgrade to make sure it is compatible with your current process?Prima Donnas appear brash, excessive, r eactionary, and dramatic. They are comfortable in the spotlight. Prima Donnas want you focused on them. They use complaining to meet their need to be heard, admired, and appreciated.Negotiate with Prima Donnas by recognizing them but avoid getting lost in their drama. How are you going to present your position and get positive recognition for your efforts?Controllers appear to be tyrants, bullies, slave drivers, and bulldozers. Controllers want you to yield to their authority and will andrang over you if you let them. Controllers use complaining to get things done, motivate others to action, or get rid of restraints.Negotiate with Controllers by standing your ground. Let Controllers know you are aware of problems and, if possible, let them decide the next direction. The client cant provide the information to you until noon. Do you want to discuss what we receive at three today or first thing tomorrow?Toxics appear as narcissists, psychopaths and manipulators. They are deceitful, rut hless, and can adapt their behavior to please management while tormenting coworkers and direct reports. Toxics want to charm and disarm you to further their personal agendas. They are self-absorbed egotists who are hazardous to your health.Negotiate with Toxics by reminding yourself that you are a rational person. Get a counselor or business coach to advise you on this disorder. Document actions and use stealth. If Toxics think you are plotting against them, they may attempt to retaliate and harm your professional reputation.Acknowledge a Toxics comments to you. Thank you for that observation. I will do my best to eliminate that offending behavior. Please let me know if you become aware of it again or see anything else. Then, find a way to escape working with them if possible.Generate a Complaint-Free ZoneDeal with your difficult employees, especially complainers, so that you will improve workplace communication.
